This was the first Valentine's Day that Data had actually had the opportunity to engage in the traditional activities with someone that he cared for. In fact, this was the longest relationship that he had ever had by far, and though still technically new by human standards he was quite content in it. Avon gave him security, and the man had an almost Vulcan sense of loyalty about him. The scientist disdained it, obviously, but it was a quality that Data appreciated. It made Avon dependable, and he had little doubt that he would do whatever it took to take care of him.

He had gone through some basic preparations for the evening. He picked a point when Avon was out to set up some candles and light them, and then set Spot's food dish and cat bed in the bathroom (though she recently seemed to think that the tub was her bed) so he could close her off in there for the rest of the night. He cleaned off and arranged all the tools and parts that were on the table in a very manageable order (and unlike most significant others who would do this, he would actually remember where everything was if asked).

He pulled out his long smoking jacket from the closet, sliding it on over his shirt and starting to tie the tasseled cord... before he rethought it and pulled it off. And then put it back on and closed the closet door before he could convince himself to change his mind again.

He set out two brandy snifters and the bottle he'd gotten for him discretely a couple of days before on the table beside of the bed. ...Now it was time to determine whether he should wait by the table or on the bed with the violin? ...He settled for picking up the violin and standing, placing the bow against the strings. Data would stand and play and wait... and hope the Vulcan next door didn't mind.
